Rüdiger BenninghausThe statue of Viking Leif Eriksson (c. 975–1020) against the backdrop of the Evangelical Lutheran Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík (Iceland). The statue was a gift from the United States to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the Icelandic Parliament (Althing) in 1930.
Leif Eriksson was probably the first European to set foot on the American mainland around the year 1000.
