More than I bargained for: My failed adventures in haggling

From friendly negotiation to fierce haggling, there are those who love the art of bargaining. And then there are those who just plain stink at it.

Haggling in the souk is not a conflict; it's a centuries-old cultural dance! It's about respect, patience, and a little playful banter. What was the best item you ever managed to negotiate a great price for while traveling? Share your secret! #MoroccoTips #SoukLife #Haggling

A very surprising day of haggling bills today.

Upgraded my broadband to 500mb for exactly the same price I've been paying for 250mb.

Renewed my fixed rate utility contract with EDF and they've credited me £150 for doing so 🤷

It pays to talk to people and ask what deals they can get you 🙂

A quotation from Montaigne, Michel de:

«
There is nothing I hate more than haggling. It is simply a petty and brazen business: Two parties will negotiate and argue for an hour only to walk away from what they have solemnly agreed to over five pennies’ worth of overcharge.

My spouse and I went to the annual #fleamarket in the next village, a thing we enjoy! I had no plans to spend much when I noticed a #roadbike with a rather odd style. Having looked at it just a bit too long I got pulled into #haggling - bad for the vendor, since my opening bid was low. So, on my way home I practiced the art of pushing a bike while riding the other. Today I did minor repairs and took it for a ride. What a bargain!
Edit: a friend told me the brand has nothing to do with soda!

The Unlikely New TikTok Influencers: Old-School Watch Dealers

Their rapid-fire haggling in Manhattan’s diamond district teases the fantasy of making a market, rather than just being subject to it.

Pro tip: on a website, put a bunch of shit in your cart, and then just leave.

There are only 3 places left where haggling is still in place in big business, car buying and job pay. Both ways the little guy gets screwed and there is mass inequality. People like thinking they are getting a deal for their haggling skills but that is often not the case and they have jacked up the prices, or artificially lowered to pay to account for those people who happen to have good negotiating skills. Black folks embraced brand loyalty early on because a packaged item with a set price didn't discriminate, however any time they had to haggle, or the shop dispensed the item, they would always get screwed either ending up being charged more than white folk or getting dispensed less than they agreed to.
Cars cost way more than in any other nation due to cheap credit and the fact that new cars are required by law to go through dealerships, even though they could easily be delivered to a rental company direct from the factor that you buy online for a set price and you could try out a car at the rental place. However because they make so much money for screwing us over they have bought politicians to ensure they hold a monopoly on car buying and its quite possible there is racial discrimination still if not there is certainly neuro-divergent disparity in costs.
In Germany each job has its base pay set and public, and then you get extra based on your age to ensure you have the ability to retire and since every job has a union, agism is mitigated in the hiring process. You know what you are getting when you get hired and know you are getting paid equally reguardless of who you are.
In America wages are purposely hush hush super secret so no one ever knows their own worth. I literally don't know what I'm worth and am only going on what I know about the people around me who realize that the the tabboo creating silence is wage theft. Just discovered that someone with one year experience doing the exact same job I am doing is making the exact same money I with 15 years experience am making. I'm asking for $20 more for my next job but I may be underselling myself still. As recession employer I will always make less than I'm worth. The next generation, unless there is another recession will always be richer.
Haggling is a form of descrimination and unless you are neuro-typical and in the privilaged class, you will always lose even if you feel like you won. There is a reason why a rich kid with no degree will always make more than a poor black man with a batchelors. Neopotism is a powerful thing.
