Stage two of #hadrianswall today, from Burgh-by-Samds to central Carlisle.

Not as hot today. Mainly walking down lanes around quality sheep pasture along the banks of The Eden, then through a green corridor through Carlisle's industrial hinterland into a municipal park. The agricultural land was rather like parts of South Cambridgeshire. Lambs congregating in nursery clusters here, fighting and playing in the long grass by fences, as the ewes rest. It's so odd how completely ewes lose the vitality of lambs.

The park is called Bitts Park, which I fancifully like to think is named after Mister Bitt, a famously bad dish washer.

Finished The Monk. Started Gravity's Rainbow. No more Hadrian's wall for a few weeks.

First bit of our #hadrianswall walk today, me and kid: Bowness on #Solway to Burgh by Sands.

Sort of esturine, heathy landscape, and incredibly hot, still, flat, and silent. Could easily have been near Ventnor or The Lizzard, not the Scottish border.

Lots of sheep with lambs in the shade of hawthorn, and cows wallowing in estuary pools.

Amused by the tenacity with which Burgh holds onto its Edward I connection, being: on passing a nearby bog on his way to somewhere else, he died of an infectious disease. He was probably unaware of even the village's existence!

Cutaway of a tower on Hadrian's Wall, Roman Britain, 2nd century AD (Philip Corke)

A Hadrian’s Wall souvenir from 2nd century CE is found in Spain.

Researchers from the CSIC and the National Archaeological Museum have published a study of the ‘Berlanga cup’, an exceptional Roman piece from the 2nd century CE made in Britain and found in Soria.

It’s the only one of its kind with data from the eastern flank of Hadrian’s Wall.

Vindolanda

Ever thought history was all sewn up? Vindolanda will put you right on that.

I have never had much time for museums. My attention wanders, especially when herding the young scion at full tilt through tourist traps. But Vindolanda stopped me in my tracks.

What makes it work is simple: the ruins and the finds sit together. You see the thing, then you see where it came fro ...
