From the dank, malodorous depths of the #gutter, he smiled up at the passers-by.
No help offered, needed, nor welcomed.
Most skirted round his lice-ridden, filthy body.
All wondered at his smile, which helped to sustain the smile in all its gap-toothed glory.
He had tried.
Led.
Bullied.
Cajoled.
Pleaded.
Begged.
But no one wanted to stand up for themselves.
His smile?
The abdication of all responsibility, even for himself.
