SWANSEA: Girls across the UK break World Record with giant friendship bracelet
Girls across the UK have come together to create what is believed to be the world’s longest friendship bracelet, in a landmark moment marking 150 years of Girls Friendly Society (GFS).
Made from more than 4,000 hand-braided segments, the bracelet was officially measured at a special celebration held at Dylan Thomas Community School, Swansea, on 22 April 2026. The final length of 1,362.41 metres surpasses the previous record of 852.19 metres.
The event brought together girls, volunteers, partners and supporters from across Wales and beyond. It marks the first time the full bracelet has been assembled in one place.
Each segment of the bracelet was made by a different person – girls in GFS groups, corporate volunteers, members of the public who wove around 50 metres at the Magpies Festival in York, and supporters as far afield as Cambodia. Together, they represent the friendships, confidence and sense of belonging that GFS has been building for a century and a half.
Heather Smith, Chief Executive of Girls Friendly Society, said:
“This bracelet is more than a measurement. It’s a powerful symbol of what girls can create when they feel supported and connected. Every section was made by someone who cares about the same thing we do: giving girls a safe space to belong.
“As we mark 150 years, this moment captures both where we’ve come from and where we’re going -and the thousands of girls whose lives are shaped by friendship, confidence and the knowledge that they matter.”
The initiative launched last summer, when GFS invited girls and supporters to create bracelet segments. Over 2,000 packs were ordered through the organisation’s fundraising platform, with GFS groups contributing hundreds of additional metres.
Girls Friendly Society currently supports around 600 girls across the UK. The bracelet project reflects both the reach of the organisation and the strength of the communities it serves.
