I'm playing Guardian Tales and I'm at chapter 10. Holy shit is it depressing. Its one of those Bad Future storylines where the MC isn't there. Though instead of Pottersville, the Invaders have taken over the world and the last of humanity is fighting a losing war in Heavenhold. Everyone is worse off or dead. I just got though the side quest where the character that races you in every chapter is in a wheelchair now. Seeing you seemingly return from the dead gives her the will to go behind enemy lines to get a pancea out of a vending machine. It doesn't work. It expired some years earlier. And that's after the previous chapter where the Invaders manipulated the Rah Empire to do a holocaust on the fleeing Kanteburian people.
Shit like that.
I suspect we'll find a time portal to get me back to when I left to undo this future, but its still hitting hard for this kind of story. Maybe because the game in general is so lighthearted.

Well, I can say I did not expect refugees & nazis in this game.
A quick recap of the story: The Kanterbury Kingdom (where you're from) was attacked by "Invaders" (aliens?) & essentially destroyed. You, the Knight, are trying to find all of the Champions to defeat them.
This eventually takes you to Kanterbury's rival, the Rah Empire. Going to the border with a bunch of Kanturbury refugees & quickly get separated from your party and taken to a labor camp.
9-2 sees a Rah princess (the champion) making you into a kapo to help her to reform the camps (to increase production). She turns it from a death camp to a labor camp, but a minister takes some people for "labor." You learn that the execution chamber has been activated.
This is...really fucking rough. Especially for a cheesy game full of references and tits. This level inexplicably references Full Metal Alchemist, the Soup Nazi, and the Boy in the Striped pajamas.
Like...wtf.

It's 2D isometric, kinda Legend of Zelda-y, but there are heavy deviations. The plot overall tries to be subversive, playing with tropes and it largely works. It won't win any writing awards and pales at the depth of HSR , but enjoyable.
I wouldn't want to play it without a controller, but if you were playing Genshin, it's not as hard as that. I just stink at touch controls.
Lastly it as the pretty standard 2D art that's kinda sorta animated with the warp tool. First round characters have alternate 3D art, but it seems to have been dropped for newer ones. Which is fine as the 2D is better.
As to the gatcha parts, it has like, 20 currencies. At least two of which are paid. Diamonds are the free/paid one that can be used to buy energy/pulls/etc. It gives a ton of stuff out though. The grind starts to go uphill around level 40.
