@justincrozer I avoid using "echosystems" altogether?

I use Android on my smartphone because it gives me more freedom to choose how to use my devices;

I use MBP M1 but apart from macOS itself I don't use any other Apple software.

It's a simple result of not wanting to be stuck in closed garden… for a long while I was using gmail and other google services but then #gtalk and #googlereader got killed. Luckily, when I wanted to ditch gmail I already had my own domain so it was mostly a matter of switching MX records to be free of #google…

@sgtsilas @quillmatiq.com not sure if it's still relevant and it was debunked at nauseum already.

A started using it ages ago, when google killed #gtalk and it was basically the only sane alternative that checked my requirements:
- ItJustWorks
- reliable message delivery
- easy way to share files/attachments
- multi-device-support without a hassle
- complete history on all devices
- native on desktop.

Alternatives were so-so at the time. whatsapp was mobile only with only single device, fb is yuck, not sure if signal even existed at the time, xmpp has issues with reliable working on mobile…

fast forward to today and most of the issues still applies to whatsapp/signal but given more and more moronic Telegram/Durov policies I'm more and more inclined to migrate to XMPP…

So the discussion about #meta joining the #fediverse is ... #gtalk with #xmpp all over again, do I get that right? If so, we can easily sit it out, they'll try to push their proprietary extensions onto it, make people depend it and defederate themselves again in the end when it doesn't seem to work out their way. 🤷‍♀️

Back in the days of Google Talk (#gtalk) it was possible to reach #gmail users without touching the google mail server (which generally refuses me) because IIRC Google users would get gtalk msgs automatically. Now that google abandoned #jabber, are there any other ways to reach gmail users outside of email? #askFedi

Oh, and I finally got #Pidgin working for #Hangouts / #Gtalk again. Still no luck with #Facebook messenger, because they want me to disable 2FA before they'll give me an app-specific password (lolno), but the more layers of sensible design I can put between myself and these shitshows the happier I'll be.

I thought #GTalk was already dead, and that #Hangouts never supported #XMPP, because it's not compatible with what they wanted to do with #WebRTC. Was I wrong? In either case, yes, you can definitely carry on using XMPP withou gOgle. There's a list of suggested servers discussed here:

@[email protected] Thanks to the grouping XEP mentioned in https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0387.html , the server list on https://jmp.chat/suggested_servers.html, and the compliance testers (either referenced in the last link or superior ones), people at least know which service providers are complying with XEP-0387. #XMPP

@shura я так понимаю, по #xmpp это наследие #GTalk еще. И вроде как оно работает, но #Google отключил s2s. Если в Hangouts ей не дойдет, то в GMail почту придёт - там веб-интерфейс в углу висит.

Il y a qq années, #Google a décidé de remplacer sa messagerie instantanée #GTalk par #HangOuts.

L'accroche marketing trouvée était : "Avec HangOut vous allez pouvoir récupérer ts vos #SMS dans #GMail"

Bcp se sont dits : "Trop génial. Merci Google!"😍 et ont installé de suite HangOuts puis validé les CGU sans les lire, comme d'habitude.

Ce faisant ils ont donné à Google un accès complet👁 à un périmètre de data personnelles qui lui échappait encore.💰
