Now there's something a little more challenging.

The long-running Cold War between the four houses has broken out and gone hot. The Doloreaux have truly embraced the remnants of their old pagan ways, deciding that their enemies are cursed by God, inherently unclean, and thus must be violently suppressed using the most brutal methods. Triskelion has gone from a beautiful city of trade and understanding to an oppressive walled prison, surrounded by boar troops who make occasional sweeps through the city committing atrocities with abandon.

Our PCs are the second sons and daughters (or later) of the major houses who did not make it out of the city. Children, for the most part, who spend their time scared, abused, and barely scraping by day-to-day. The Doloreaux families who refused the call to the primal are hunted the most, facing, at best, a swift death and at worst surviving horrors. In the PCs favor, they have found a small scriyng ball which connects them to a handful of other rebels and provides opportunity.

Death comes more often than escape.

@kensanata Single-digit sessions for a #campaign was an innovation I picked up from games specifically addressing the issue - such as #PrimetimeAdventures, #GreyRanks, #TheMountainWitch and #ApocalypseWorld.

Embracing that greatly increased my sense of personal fulfillment in #RPGs... I still get a percentage of unfinished, aborted campaigns, but those have become just a minor disappointment.
