Today in Labor History June 14, 2017: A fire at Grenfell Tower in London killed 72 people and destroyed 151 flats. The fire spread quickly and did so much damage due to a shoddy refurbishment job by Rydon Construction in 2016 in order to save money. The residents were overwhelming working-class people of color. They had been complaining for years about safety violations. To this date, no one has gone on trial or faced punishment for the fire. Some Members of Parliament tried to demonize residents and blame them for their own deaths. Yet they have no problem sending people to prison for 24 years for inconveniencing, or embarrassing, those supporting genocide in Gaza.

The Met Police says that up to 57 individuals and 20 companies could face criminal charges over the Grenfell Tower fire, which killed 72 people and was caused by flammable cladding that a public inquiry deemed avoidable. Although the investigation is expected to bring charges as early as next year, a trial is not likely before 2029 – twelve years after the disaster – prompting bereaved families and survivors to call the prolonged wait for justice “unacceptable.”

Up to 57 individuals and 20 firms may be prosecuted for the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire that killed 72 people, according to the Metropolitan Police, which says its detectives have gathered strong evidence of corporate gross negligence, manslaughter, fraud and misconduct in public office. The evidence will be sent to the Crown Prosecution Service by September, though any charges are unlikely before June 2027 and trials may not start until 2029. A public inquiry that concluded in 2024 placed responsibility on the government and multimillion‑pound companies whose faulty cladding and “systematic dishonesty” allowed the blaze to spread, while campaign group Grenfell United welcomed the move with cautious grief and a call for accountability.

The 2024 Grenfell inquiry identified the tragedy’s root cause as the “systematic dishonesty” of multimillion‑dollar companies whose products enabled the fire to spread, and highlighted widespread failures across the construction industry, council, regulators and central government that made the deaths avoidable. In response, Scotland Yard’s 220‑detective team has gathered strong evidence and plans to send files on 57 individuals and 20 firms to the Crown Prosecution Service, seeking charges that could include corporate manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter, fraud, health‑and‑safety offences and misconduct in public office; decisions on charges are expected by June 2027, though any trials may not begin until 2028 or later. Survivors’ group Grenfell United welcomed the move but warned that prolonged delays would be unacceptable and called for courts to be properly resourced to ensure swift accountability.

The Metropolitan Police announced it will ask the Crown Prosecution Service to consider charging up to 57 individuals and 20 companies for the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, submitting evidence files by the end of September and noting that a final charging decision could take until June 2027, with any trials unlikely to begin before 2029. The move follows Operation Northleigh’s £150 million investigation, which examined the actions of 15,000 people across 700 organisations and concluded that the disaster resulted from a chain of failures by government bodies, dishonest companies, and fire‑service shortcomings. Grenfell United, representing bereaved families and survivors, welcomed the step but warned that the process has already dragged on for almost a decade, urging swift accountability and adequate court resources to ensure the prosecutions proceed without further delay.

It's welcomed that Farage has sacked his housing chief because of the Grenfell remarks.

It's worth noting though, that to date, the only people to face any consequences regarding Grenfell Tower have been those who have joked or been disparaging about it.
