Why did the Green Party win the Gorton and Denton by-election on 27 February 2026? Hannah Spencer beat Labour with 14,980 votes to change the local leadership.

The Green Party got 14,980 votes, which is 4,402 more than the second-place party. This is the first time the Greens have ever won a by-election for a seat in Parliament.

After a pretty crap couple of weeks personally and professionally and seeing the tirade of vile political greed-driven rhetoric that is given a spotlight by news media eager to just grab attention at whatever cost, I'd like to thank the people of Denton and Gorten for giving me and others something to smile about and a reminder that hope exists. There is a way through this sewer laden river and seeing a positive, inclusive candidate and campaign rewarded has been good to see . Hope is the best response to this stuff and by joining together we can forge the way forward. Thank you people.of Denton and Gorten.
