Historic win for nature! The NSW government has moved to establish the Great Koala National Park, expanding protected land to 476,000 ha and immediately halting logging on 176,000 ha of vital koala habitat—safeguarding 12,000+ koalas and 36,000 greater gliders.
This long-awaited step—10+ years in the making—is a triumph for our forests, wildlife, and climate. While six timber mills and ~300 jobs are impacted, the government has promised JobKeeper-style support, counselling, retraining, and economic development packages for affected communities.
This park isn’t just about koalas—it’s a biodiversity refuge, a climate buffer, and a major opportunity for nature-based tourism (projected to bring $163 million in economic benefit).
After years of advocacy by communities, scientists, and Traditional Custodians, this is NSW’s most significant conservation victory in decades. Let’s stand strong for our wildlife—with hope, action, and gratitude.

Timber industry hits out at government plan to protect Aussie icon from extinction

YES! The #GreatKoalaNationalPark is finally - after a decade of fighting - reality! The park will cover *ALL* the 176,000 hectares originally included in the study, linking together with existing reserves to make the largest National Park of 476,000 hectares total, covering rainforest and sclerophyll. A complete moratorium on logging these areas will come into force tomorrow and remain until the paperwork for the park is finalised and in legal force.

These mid-north coast forests are the most important koala habitats in Australia, but also are the most biodiverse and life rich ecosystems outside of the the wet tropics.

There is still much to do. #ChrisMinns still maintains that native forest logging has a future in #NewSouthWales - It does not, and has no future anywhere in Australia. Minns and #Albo still need to be made to understand this. This work isn't done till we have a federal ban on all native logging.

Nonetheless, today is frikkin wonderful! Be happy and celebrate, because NSWs beautiful and sacred northern forests and all life are much, much safer today. #ForestryCorp is on the back foot. Their days are numbered. Today is a happy day 💚🌳🐨🌳💚

NSW govt delays and deflects over the #GreatKoalaNationalPark and a ban on #Logging of #NativeForests solely to placate #ForestryCorp and hold out for cash from #CarbonCredits.

They're not even pretending it's about "regional jobs" and "ways of life". It's just cold, hard cash for mates.

Extraction and violence go hand in hand

How a fight to save the bush became a battlefield

"In Coffs Harbour Local Court the forestry contractors Michael Luigi Vitali and Rodney James Hearfield were found guilty of assaulting Graham and his companion Andre Johnston that afternoon on the road on the Dorrigo Plateaux three and a half years ago. No conviction was recorded."

"What she (Higginson) still believes to have been collusion between police, loggers and the FCNSW reflected a dangerous culture in which protesters are perceived by the government to be suspect automatically, while those who profit from resource extraction were above suspicion."

How a fight to save the bush became a battlefield

A bid to preserve rainforest trees and protect endangered animals led to a long-running campaign of intimidation.

The Sydney Morning Herald

Forestry Corp has started logging compartment 14 of the Pine Creek State Forest within the boundaries of the Great Koala National Park (GKNP).

"The compartment is bordered on three sides by Bongil Bongil National Park. It contains a ‘koala hub’ – the only interim government policy protection afforded koala in the GKNP."

"Fully 50-60% of every tree felled is ‘waste’ for Forestry’s purposes. Non target species such as casuarina (the primary food source of endangered glossy black cockatoo) is swept away as trash. All this is bulldozed into 3-meter high long windrows and burned. What are the CO2 losses from this practice one wonders."

‘Minds were blown’: These scientists were stunned at what’s happening on the NSW North Coast

‘Minds were blown’: These scientists were stunned at what’s happening on the NSW North Coast

“This means Forestry Corporation NSW plans to log three times more compartments of state forest within the proposed Great Koala National Park over the next year than they did over the last two years combined"

“It is spectacular. All the variants of this Gondwana rainforest – cool and warm, temperate rainforest and also the subtropical rainforest – is something that is so unique globally that you wouldn’t find it in this particular combination elsewhere... Professor Helge Bruelheide, professor of botany at the University of Helle in Germany, was stunned by what he has seen exploring the forests in and around the promised Great Koala National Park on the state’s North Coast this week."

“The tempo, the scale, the intensity of logging has all ramped up since labour was elected. It is a pillage. It’s a smash-and-grab operation by a loss-making Crown corporation. They are jamming boiled lollies in their mouth as they bolt down the street,” say Graham, who feels let down by Labor."

"One of the reasons the Victorian industry was eventually closed was because citizen scientists proved the state loggers were not properly protecting greater gliders. The failures cost VicForests millions of dollars in fines and access to forests it needed."

"As the legal challenges wind their way through the courts, the NCC is about to ramp up the pressure by announcing the creation of Breachwatch, a network of volunteers trained and equipped to monitor, record and report evidence of Forestry Corp breaches."
