voidampersandIt is #gravenstein apple harvest season. I made a galette. They are great for cooking. So much flavor they need almost no sugar or spice added. The smell is taking me back to my grandmothers kitchen. Everyone helping to can applesauce. Then a savory dinner and a great apple pie.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I'll treat myself to a top quality apple cider. This is one such cider, made from Gravenstein apples. When I first saw the name 'Gravenstein', it brought back strong memories from my childhood. It was a very common variety of apple when I was growing up in the 1950's. (The first reference to them in Papers Past is from 1862.) I haven't seen Gravenstein apples in the shops, but they make a mighty fine cider.
TomTwo apple cheddar crisps, one for the freezer. The 4 quarts of sliced apples that rested overnight were divided, grated cheese and the topping added and baked for an hour or so since the apples were cold.

Picked what few Gravenstein apples there were today. Didn't work out to get anything baked since it took myself 1.5 hours to pick, peel, quarter, core, and slice 6 liters of apples so ran out of time before something else needed to be in the oven. Orange vit-c mix and a little sugar added to hold them over till tomorrow.
