This case shows the growing dilemma that many countries now face. In a global supply chain economy, the most capable #digital #platforms are rarely national

- They are built, operated, updated, and legally #governed elsewhere

For #sensitive domains such as #defense, #intelligence, #public #safety, and #critical #infrastructure, this creates a structural tension between performance and control.

A quotation from Lincoln

What I do say is that no man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent. I say this is the leading principle, the sheet-anchor of American republicanism. […] According to our ancient faith, the just powers of governments are derived from the consent of the governed. Now the relation of master and slave is pro tanto a total violation of this principle. The master not only governs the slave without his consent, but he governs him by a set of rules altogether different from those which he prescribes for himself. Allow all the governed an equal voice in the government, and that, and that only, is self-government.

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) American lawyer, politician, US President (1861-65)
Speech (1854-10-16), “In Reply to Senator Douglas,” Peoria, Illinois

We are called upon to choose between Mr. X and Ms. Y. This time, we decide to #vote for #Party Y, and... nothing changes. Why?
Because we are not #governed by individuals or #parties, but by the #system. This article explains how it all works and how it cann be changed.

Governments are only apparently elected by us. Behind them lie systems, and they actually determine who leads them.

#Quebec is #governed by a #whitenationalist #movement. The only difference between the #PartiQuebecois and the #GOP is the #PQ are #fracophone #WhiteNationalists.

"#AI is “promising” nothing. It is #people who are promising – or not promising. AI is a piece of software. It is made by people, deployed by people and #governed by people... in terms of urgency, I’m more concerned about ameliorating the risks that are here and now [than by the risks of the techbro SkyNet singularity]."

I can see that we are nearing #latestage #capitalism, I can’t yet tell if we are knee deep or neck deep, but I feel the wet water.

To add and compound this, I’d like to posit we are also in late stage #individualism. We have essentially established a norm where we are no longer willing to be #governed.

We are "#governed" by people who have made a speciality not of managerial competence or moral rectitude but rather of establishing power within and for their particular gang to the exclusion of others.

And most of the rest of us seem to think it is somehow "accountable" because they let us tick a box every few years.
