the role of felix dueball (1880-1970) in popularizing the game of go outside east asia can hardly be overestimated. as a player and teacher in berlin from 1919, the strongest european player for decades, and highly respected in japan, he was a key figure in the history of go. 1/2
sung-hwa hong’s “Erster Kyu” (“First Kyu”) is a coming-of-age story set in the world of the game of go. it also employs a questionable narrator in order to deal with some uncomfortable aspects of korean culture.
