A few people in the other place have suggested that Akechi smiles in the closeup in the P5R opening, so I had a look and I'm afraid he doesn't. *Ren* is smiling.

The wide shot is more playdoughey but I think clearly the same expression.

A similar rumour is that Ren smiles in one version of the true ending but not the other, depending on whether Akechi appears. I took a look at that one, too, and I was never able to find it.

Took a look at Akechi casting, to see if he removes the lower beak of his black mask helmet along with the mask.

In the first two images the mask's in his left hand, but he still has the lower beak.

The third image is less clear, and the beak's hard to make out. But it should be there if it's in the other shots.

So yes, it *looks* as if the mask vanishes, but he's holding it! And at the end he claps it back onto his face.
