Federal judge rules ICE cannot re-detain Kilmar Abrego Garcia

A federal judge has ruled that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement cannot re-detain Kilmar Abrego Garcia because a 90-day detention period has expired and the U.S. government has no viable plan for deporting him. The Salvadoran national’s case has become a focal point in the immigration debate after he was mistakenly deported to his home country last year. Since his return, he has been fighting a second deportation to a series of African countries proposed by Department of Homeland Security officials. Abrego Garcia has an American wife and child and has lived in Maryland for years, but he immigrated to the U.S. illegally as a teenager.

Democrat Taylor Rehmet flips Texas state Senate seat

Democrat Taylor Rehmet has won a special election for the Texas state Senate and flipped a reliably Republican district that President Donald Trump won by 17 points in 2024. The labor union leader and veteran easily defeated Republican conservative activist Leigh Wambsganss in the Fort Worth-area district. Trump distanced himself from the loss Sunday, after urging votes for Wambsganss a day earlier. Rehmet was victorious with support from national organizations. Rehmet's win lasts only until early January. He is to face Wambsganss again in the November general election to decide the seat for a full four-year term.

Democrat Christian Menefee wins House seat for Houston in special election

Democrat Christian Menefee has won a Texas U.S. House seat in a special election that will narrow Republicans’ already-slim majority. Menefee, the Harris County attorney, prevailed Saturday in a runoff against Amanda Edwards, a former Houston City Council member. He will replace the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, a former Houston mayor, who died in March 2025. The seat representing the heavily Democratic Houston-based district has been vacant for nearly a year. Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott didn’t schedule the first round of voting until November. Menefee and Edwards were the top vote-getters in a 16-candidate, all-parties primary. They advanced to a runoff because no candidate won a majority of the vote.
