Serious question (and you can reply in a DM if you don't want to publicly disclose any personal medical info): have any of you started taking a low-dose #GLP-1 pill?
I am especially curious if any of my #autistic mutuals have started on it.
I'm extremely sensitive to medication and I'm a little hesitant, because I could start it for $150 a month for two months, but then the price will shoot up to $200 a month.
I'm also hesitant to start a drug that might be difficult to get off of, and I'm hesitant to lock myself into taking a drug that they might raise the price on, because that's what they always do.
I don't have insurance, so I will be paying out-of-pocket. There's no chance of me getting insurance (Medicare) until I'm at least 67, about a decade away (unless they move that goal post or kill that program, which they probably will).
There's no generic available yet, and apparently some of the supposed less-expensive ones are actually dangerous knock-offs. There's also no current way to compound the drug. (All of my prescriptions right now are from a compounding pharmacy because they're very specialized low-dose prescriptions.)
On the plus side, if it ends up helping me cut down on grocery costs overall, that might even the financial burden out? That almost sounds macabre. I love food. I don't want to fall out of love with food, but enjoying food may be part of what's going to kill me.
What I'm hearing is, one friend got really spaced out and couldn't stand the pill, so they went back to the injection (I cannot, canNOT psych myself up to do an injection right out of the gate). Another friend said, "get ready to hate food -- and have alcohol make you very sick!" when I mentioned it (they're on an injection as well).
Another friend said they have to really be careful about their protein intake because the body will start to metabolize itself, which I'm aware of from being on low-carb diets before (which were terrible in spite of the weight loss and caused me to lose hair plus they screwed up my hormones).
I'm curious about the heart-protective and muscle-protective effects, but my doctor can't shed any light on that at this point. I do not have EDS, at least not the "double-jointed" kind, but I'm hearing that it can be beneficial in those respects.
Anyway, I'm just curious of other people's experiences.
Thank you in advance if you have anything to share. I'm kind of scared of it because I don't like to take pharmaceuticals, but I'm also at the end of my rope regarding heading down that prediabetic and postmenopausal path.
