Mastodon itself doesn't support formatting, but other fediverse software like #GoToSocial, #snac, and #GlitchSocial do.
Consider migrating to an instance running one of those. :)

No, actually the markdown is handled by the server.
Both #GoToSocial and #GlitchSocial (a mastodon fork) handle Markdown and long post limits.
GreyCat, Red Mage#glitchSoc admins -- my search-fu is failing me. can someone point me to a guide for updating the max toot length? I see there's a variable for it now so I'd rather make use of that than change the code but I haven't been able to find how to do that.
