I ran into this Glaucous-winged Gull a couple of days ago. I believe he was auditioning to be the town crier.

I call this piece, "The Gull With The Pearl Earring".

But it wasn't the only gull around playing with weird junk! I wonder if humans lost that stuff long ago. Or maybe gulls themselves stole it, or crows, and it all ended up in the mud

Fat raindrops falling from gray shadowed clouds; a last blade of sunlight comes clear from a gap at the horizon and slants across Portland. Beyond the crows beginning to flock up for return to their evening roost, two pale gulls winging high catch the illumination and turn their flight toward the Willamette.

Something I've never seen gulls do before: they get a bit of lift, then pivot and stab down, assisted by their huge wings. It looks like a way more awkward and inefficient form of dabbling.

Dabbling ducks can smoothly dunk the front half of their bodies with their butts in the air, to munch on weeds, moss, bugs or whatever, but these gulls are just not built for that. I guess this works only if they're aiming for something specific close to the surface

Some unknown gull drama. There were a bunch of gulls resting on the water, each minding their own business and observing proper social distancing. But every once in a while one would get in another's personal space. Much squawking and posturing would ensue, followed by one running away
