I always write commit messages as if my customers would read them, even though they don't have (or want) access to the repo.

Similarly, I talk about people as if they are standing behind me and don't bad-mouth them.

In text and emails I do the same.

It's not being meek. It's just not talking shit about people or putting stupid stuff on the record if it serves no purpose. Plus, I've said stupid stuff when I was young and got caught out. I was young, I learned.

What would be the point in saying something that I would not say to someone's face?

People talk too much without saying anything. The signal to noise ratio is terrible.
