Is there a more Glaswegian set of footwear anywhere in existence? Created by Scottish pop artist Edmund Smith for the comedian Billy Connolly, they made their first appearance at the Aberdeen Music Hall in August 1975 making them 50 years old this year, and they soon became an iconic part of Billy's stage persona. They're now housed in the collections of the Glasgow Museums.

Perhaps most interesting is the sword. As Kiribati has no metal ores, the islanders had to look elsewhere to make its blade and they chose shark teeth, creating a highly effective weapon which would both slash and tear at flesh in equal measure.

Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum has many treasures in it, but this probably the one which most facinated me as a child. It's a suit of armour from Kiribati in Micronesia. The body covering is made from coconut while the helmet, which is more for show than protection, is made from the inflated and then dried skin of a porcupine fish.
