There are few better places to visit on a wet winter's day in Glasgow than the Kibble Palace glasshouse in the Botanic Gardens. As well as being a marvel of Victorian engineering, it's got a distinctly tropical feel to it, even when it's cold and rainy outside.

A rain-soaked early 19th Century sundial in Glasgow's Botanic Gardens. Despite our prevailing climate, Scotland has a surprsingly long history and abundance of sundials going back to the 16th Century. This includes obelisk sundials, which are unique to Scotland.

Scipione Tadolini's 1880 sculpture of Eve in the Kibble Palace glasshouse in Glasgow's Botanic Gardens. Originally housed in Kelvingrove Art Gallery, but was moved to its current, more appropriate, location in the 1930s.

I started the day with a tree, and I'm going to end today with one, too. This is a kaki or persimmon tree in the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow. It's the offspring of a hibakujumoku, or survivor tree, which was one of the few living things to survive the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki in Japan 80 years ago today. It was given to Glasgow in 2002 by the Japanese as a symbol of peace.

Love the way this tree stump has been left in place and turned into a seat in Glasgow's Botanic Gardens.

The newly decorated 1902 lamp base outside the Botanic Gardens in the West End of Glasgow. I love how this now looks.

The Kibble Palace, arguably Glasgow's finest example of Victorian iron work. Created by John Kibble, it was originally built at Coulport on the shores of Loch Long before being taken apart, moved to Glasgow and re-built at its current location in The city's Botanic Gardens in the 1870s.
