William Gouge, Puritan minister, considers imitation of God. Luke 6:36 says we are to be merciful, just as the Father is merciful. In context, Gouge is talking of imitating the Good Samaritan, and providing help.

Today, do we still link our interest in God’s mercy and providing temporal help to people in misery? Or, is this the ‘ole time religion’?

How can you “have respect to the object of your mercy, rather than to yourself”?

Henry B Whipple was the first Episcopal bishop of Minnesota. Here he writes of working with indigenous people, and expresses an outrage that reddens his cheeks at the lies told the Indians to steal their land.
Does Whipple indict or does he represent your religion? Your civilization?
