Legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, 86, was involved in a serious crash on July 25 while driving his Land Rover Defender through the winding roads of Abbiadori, Sardinia. The SUV reportedly missed a sharp turn, crashed through a low wall, and rolled nearly 20 metres to a lower road. Giugiaro, alone in the car, was airlifted to Olbia’s Giovanni Paolo II Hospital. Despite initial concerns, his condition is now stable and not life-threatening. - Photos from the scene show the Defender’s A- and B-pillars remarkably intact, even after the rollover and front-end destruction. The roof held up, the cabin didn’t collapse, likely key to Giugiaro’s survival. - Over his seven-decade career, Giugiaro shaped more than 200 models and influenced over 50 million cars worldwide. The Volkswagen EA 276 Concept, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign in 1969, was a significant precursor to the Volkswagen Golf. This concept vehicle showcased innovative features that would later influence the golf's design, which became one of Volkswagen's most successful models.
The EA 276 Concept featured a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, which was a departure from the traditional rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration of the Volkswagen Beetle. It was equipped with a 1.0-litre, air-cooled, flat-four engine that produced 45 horsepower, providing adequate performance for its time.
