Gitkin's latest is an understated but exotic guitar journey that keeps New Orleans as its home base.

Despite my 15+ year long radio campaign, surf music has never caught on in New Orleans, and my chances to talk about a local group are rare. In fact, Gitkin is not surf. It's the sort of passport psych* similar to groups like Khruangbin, Glass Beams, and BALTHVS, and it's been working! Once a side project from Brian J Gitkin's role in Pimps of Joytime, Gitkin (as a musical entity) has become a bigger focus, with major festival spots and international tours.
It's all guitar-fest with Gitkin, who plays a funky and eclectic (though stylistically consistent) combination of everything from surf rock to the dark western sound, from cumbia to middle eastern tones, and a whole bunch more.

The music that guitarist composer Brian J Gitkin creates is a diverse blend of styles from around the globe, with his slinky guitar sound the main thread that connects them all. It is mostly instrumental, except when a guest vocalist makes an appearance now and then. It is also quite guitar centric, as one would expect. There is a fair amount of surf rock in his work, some cumbia, occasional dub, Ennio Morricone style classic dark western tones, Middle Eastern themes, and elements of desert blues. Even the old school swampy blues of his native New Orleans shows up to join the tag team. Despite the eclectic nature of his material, Gitkin has a way of putting them together in a stylistically consistent manner that produces an uptempo stream of funky dance party.
