as of last night's viewing session, i'm now ~1/3 thru S5 of #GilmoreGirls [being my 3rd or 4th series watch/rewatch, iirc]. it's set mainly in USA's Connecticut, & made+set in the early Oughties. at about that same time, in [mainly] straya, i was #transitioning, & ironically knew nothing of GG til being introduced to it by some of my merkan friends in thailand during rehab after some of our surgeries.

much as i mostly love this series, each re-viewing brings some jarring moments, which i struggle to explain & which kinda hit like a tummy punch. now & then, it makes #gay / #lesbian jokes, & at least one time albeit i vaguely think there might be a second, #trans jokes. they are toned not as in-jokes by empathic allies; they are punching-down meannesses. two examples;

• "that woman looks like she's a man" [laughter ensued]
• "we [lorelai & luke, spoken by lorelai] could go on the run, & both of us have a sex change; you'd have to have one too, so then we could still hold hands & kiss in public, otherwise it would be weird"

what was the vanilla public's #LGBTQI "mood" like in US, especially New England, in the early Oughties?

Ich bin immer noch dabei, zum ersten Mal „Gilmore Girls“ zu gucken – bin nun fast durch. Und ich finde Lorelai wirklich schwer zu ertragen. 🫠 Dieses ständige Hin und Her; ich bin ziemlich sicher, dass die Macher der Serie sie und Luke am Ende doch noch zusammenfinden lassen, aber jetzt auch noch diese Hochzeit mit Christopher… Anstrengend. Soll das romantisch sein? So viele Hürden… In letzter Konsequenz einfach nur toxisch imo. Pfffrrr.
