I fell asleep last night with a suspicion that Mark Knopfler’s lyrics for "One More Matinee" (last track on Sailing to America, 2000) may be sung to the melody of Gilbert and Sullivan’s "Modern Major General" (Pirates of Penzance, 1879).

Reader, my suspicion has been confirmed:

I didn't know about the Kevin Kline Pirates of Penzance film. Just listened to 'With Cat-Like Tread'. I still prefer the Jon English performance... but this is, in terms of pure volume, even louder.
