Nate Dogg - Music & Me (2001)

So, the King of Hooks, eh? Tbf, since I started with hip hop, I like soul and RnB as hip hop-adjacent flavours better than as standalone genres. BUT! Nate Dogg's music is a great blend of these. He's a great singer, the beats are groovy, the guest rappers' flows are tighter than ever. There's less G-funk than on his previous album, G-Funk Classics (duh), and more boom-bap-ish instrumentals, but it's no less groovy and is IMHO more complete and solid (or it's just easier for me to collect my thoughts about a single 40m-long album than a double one). Groovy, melodic, tight, what else do you need?

LNDN DRGS - Aktive (2015)

It's really rare to find G-funk outside of California, and I was hella lucky when I found these guys (they're from Canada btw). Jay Worthy delivers tight rhymes, while Sean House loads your ears with groovy and bassy funk (sometimes flavoured with a bit of synthwave/synthpop-ish leads). Very modern-sounding G-funk. I'd recommend listening to the 2018 deluxe reissue with 9 more songs, you won't get tired.

Lil Half Dead - Steel on a Mission (1996)

Turns out Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg had another cousin, who also made G-funk, and let me say: this is a dope-ass album. I appreciate live instrumentation (except synthesized drums and sometimes bass), and G-funk is a perfect genre to encompass that. The vocals are a bit quiet compared to the instrumentals, hence -0.5 points, but everything is just...  (imagine it's chefkiss, my server doesn't have such an emoji).

9.5/10, highly recommend
