Highlights from today’s session with Ro from BAMG.

Sticking with acrylic and charcoal pastel on canvas/canvas board.

Rough because the longest pose is 2 minutes.

The ones that came out best had some color vibrancy from being paint overs (recycling canvases).

Ro had a hat and was wearing a small swimsuit top and workout shorts.

Brought lil 5x5 canvases, soft pastels, and acrylic to figure drawing night.

Started with 2 min poses (pastel and water on canvas), moved to 5 mins (pastel and water drawn over with charcoal, and acrylic and charcoal with wiped out highlights), and 10 mins (variety of pastel/charcoal/acrylic) and a couple 20 mins.

Was generally unhappy with the 20 mins but kept one.

5 and 10 Minute Painted Gestures

Gesture drawing has been a reliable foundational practice to build ones skills rapidly, and for good reason. Quick repetitive practice is well documented to accelerate improvement as one has a chance to learn from and make mistakes quickly.. When done right there is also a deeper connection conveyed in these gestures.. a living essence that is achieved due to the artist ‘feeling’ the pose rather than just seeing it. In these quick paint sketches I attempted to transpose this act of conveying the impulse rather than the position of the ‘pose’ too, as one does in gesture drawings.
