Dieser schöne, leichte Gurkensalat passt perfekt in den Frühling. Die gehobelten Gurken dürften 30 Minuten in etwas Zitronensaft und Gewürzen marinieren und schmecken deswegen frisch - aber mit einem Hauch eingelegter Gurken. Ich liebe den Salat als Beilage zu Pellkartoffeln. Er begleitet aber auch Brot, Bratkartoffeln, Pommes, Gegrilltes, Tofu, Fisch, Fleisch - simpel und wandelbar eben.

Christmas Dinner

On Christmas Eve we had a very traditional German meal of roast goose, red cabbage and a choice of dumplings or simple boiled potatoes at my nephew’s place. My husband and I contributed by preparing the red cabbage using my late mother’s recipe.

We cut two heavy cabbage heads into thin ribbons a couple of days before and cooked them so that they could soak up all the great flavours over the coming days. Luckily it was cold enough to store the two big saucepans on the balcony. One of them was taken along and the second one was for our own use over the following days.

I had another red cabbage which we also cooked on the weekend after Christmas and the result is now in our freezer 😋

Schnitzel

For our Christmas Eve dinner, just the three of us, we made seitan schnitzel with sides of roasted Brussels sprouts and potatoes. Unfortunately I ran out of time to make a gravy, so I fried up some onions.

I remembered from last time that we needed more egg replacer, so I made 6 equivalent for dredging. I think I could have halved the peppered flour. We also heat way less oil in the dutch oven, which does mean the sides don’t fully fry.

The nice thing about this seitan (beyond being deliciously deep fried) is that the earlier baking step makes it much more tender than our usually favorite style of seitan.

German style food

The weekend was quite traditional in terms of food, every now and then I need that.

On Saturday we had boiled potatoes and sweet and sour green cabbage (white cabbage in German) accompanied by some Nuremberg bratwurst. The cabbage dish is something my mum used to make a lot and it fits this time of the year perfectly.

On Sunday we had German potato dumplings, red cabbage (from a jar but made better with an onion, some apple pieces and a little vinegar and sugar) - and pork neck steaks that my husband in his infinite wisdom 😬 decided to spice up with a leftover spice blend that contained a very hot chilli powder and Chinese Five Spice mix. The whole affair ended up a whole lot spicier than it should have been and was slightly odd with the red cabbage but still very edible! 😆

Considering that I don’t like baking much I was surprised to find myself preparing another cake only a month after the last one. This apple cake is very easy, I grew up with it and still like it a lot. Sometimes I add some blueberries too. Yum.
