Hypersonic missiles are an odd type of force projection, their development
required advanced engineering and lots of trial and error and yet they don’t
really do anything pre-existing missiles can’t do. What they bring to the table
is speed and maneuverability at speed. That is it. It is thus easy to miss the
impact of them here, as any air defense doctrine is already going to be
factoring in that some high value missiles are not going to be stopped, period.
What this means broadly in terms of geopolitics though is that the age of large
fixed wing fighter-bombers deploying from a network of exposed airbases is
coming to a close. In order to survive, one must be able to move and operate out
of the field. Fixed wing aircraft cannot do this. Hypersonic missiles make
static anything useless and that means the power of Armies has just leap frogged
over the power of Navies and Air Forces that existentially require static
infrastructure. Distance is no longer a form of safety and protection for Naval
and Air Power, and that massively shifts the calculus of geopolitical power.

The really frustrating beyond this war being a pointless tragedy is that the
water is getting seriously muddied here. The media will claim this is proof the
US does not have Air Dominance, which is definitely true in a very real way,
obviously, but also the US has already dropped a cataclysmic amount of bombs on
Iran and run roughshod over the entire country destroying everything like a
human hurricane of senseless evil. The US established enough Air Dominance to do
that, which is more Air Dominance than any nation could ever need if their
objective isn’t simply to create and sustain a failed state. The reason jets are
getting shot down now is that they are flying over Iran so much that they are
bound to get hit, people who aren’t in Iran I don’t think are really accurately
understand the scale of the humanitarian crisis created by this massive of a
bombing campaign in highly populated areas and against highly necessary civilian
infrastructure. If Ukraine had anywhere near the amount of decisive ability to
project this kind of airpower into russia, the war would already be over which
is one of the reasons the Iran War is such a backhanded insult to Ukraine from
the US.
