[1000 km/sec - < 500 MeV - > 50nT] These three values reflect the intensity of the #geomagnetic storm that hit the #Earth at the beginning of the week. Caused by an X1.9-class solar flare, it produced magnificent auroras—even at mid-latitudes.
Thanks to the vast network of instruments aboard space telescopes (SOHO, Solar Orbiter, etc.) and distributed on the ground, astronomers were able to track the evolution of this solar storm and its propagation toward Earth: https://www.irap.omp.eu/en/2026/01/all-about-the-solar-flare-of-january-18-2026/
MAHOOSIVE #geomagnetic #SolarStorm going on - stronger than last night. And here at 51 degs north its windy and wet. Bugger.
Last night there was a very annoying high haze which meant i got a vague purpleish sky to the north at best.
Damn
Higher levels of #CarbonDioxide will make the upper atmosphere less dense overall — but more prone to dramatic increases 📈 in density during #SolarStorms, which could have significant implications for technology like #GPS, #satellite 🛰️ internet and the #ISS. The May 2024 #geomagnetic superstorm caused nearly half of all satellites in #LEO to automatically fire their thrusters to stay spaceborne https://www.astronomy.com/science/satellites-face-new-challenges-from-solar-storms

G2 geomagnetic storm and aurora forecast for December 3-4 following CME from X1.9 solar flare
NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) issued a G2 – Moderate geomagnetic storm watch for December 3 and 4, 2025, following a coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the X1.9 solar flare from Active Region 4299 on December 1. The CME is expected to deliver a glancing blow to Earth’s magnetic field, coinciding with a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) and a sector boundary crossing, increasing the potential for moderate geomagnetic storming and visible auroras at mid-latitudes. #spaceweather #CME #solarflare #aurora #geomagnetic storm
