Here's a lovely piece of rock being used in the Iona breakwater contruction project. Probably Scottish granite from Glensanda: a lovely pegmatite vein/segregation, with associated aplitic/microgranite margin on one side. More of this kind of thing everwhere please! 🤩 😊 #Geology #Geodiversity.

There is a new breakwater being built beside the pier on Iona, to help make the service less liable to disruption by wind/swell. Here it is yesterday, at about half of the final length! Sadly, it's not using local rock: this currently contains 33k tons of rock: mostly Norwegian grey-brown granitoid (I'm trying to find the source) plus some pink-pale grey Glensanda Scottish granite. Not bad, but it would be better if it was local Ross of Mull granite IMHO. #Geodiversity #LocalStone. #Iona
