#genuary2026 #genuary16: Order and disorder.

This #genuary is not going well regarding my schedule πŸ˜€ Anyway, this prompt inspired me to play with the three body problem again.

The color of each pixel encodes the position of a body after running the (naive, imprecise) simulation for 200 iterations. Initial conditions are very slowly modulated in space&time, resulting in the emergence of something I'd like to call "locally periodic" patterns.

January 16: Order and disorder

We survey five nice straight ribbons, except for times when each ribbon develops horrendous tangles. A bit fussy to get the ribbons to look good, especially to get a ribbon to cross over itself without blending into itself. Heraclitus, frag. 124 (c. 535 – c. 475 BCE)

Heraclitus says that in the universe, what appears to be disorderly on the surface actually constitutes a beautiful and ordered whole. "The most beautiful order is like sweepings poured out at random." You can't have a beautiful whole without the messy parts.

And "Hidden harmony is better than obvious harmony."

The philosophy of algorithmic generative art, explained 2,500 years ago. :-)

Many fractals exhibit macro-scale order with micro-scale disorder, perfect for #genuary16 "Order and Disorder". The top layer is the most ordered, with entropy increasing as you go down.
