I constantly have to remind the staff that I am a GenX'er, and if there's an emergency, the best way to get ahold of me is by phone. Not by text. An actual phone call, with your voice. I am not paying attention to every beep and noise my phone makes, but when it rings, I'll have a look at it. Thankfully, my Millennial boss was able to handle the 'emergency'.

Did baby boomers eat all the pies? John Lanchester on the truth about the generation gap

It’s a grim time to be in your 20s, no doubt, but don’t blame it all on older people: being chopped up into ever smaller rivalries only serves the market

The Guardian

A quotation from Bob Dylan

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin’
Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’

Bob Dylan (b. 1941) American singer, songwriter
Song (1964), “The Times They Are A-Changin', v. 4”

What should people in their 40s do?

People in their 20s approach them with a sense of shared generation, bringing up relationship advice and entertainment topics. People in their 50s and 60s seek shared concerns about life and money.

As a result, I often find myself alone. Either working out at the gym, holed up playing video games, or reading. Today, I realized I'd finished two books: one about leaders who destroy democracy—Trump, Bukele, people like Milei—and another about the Japanese Constitution.

Today's children are constantly presented with a perfect world. The perfect trips, the perfect home, the perfect appearance. Non-stop.

That has an effect on children. I can imagine that you quickly feel like a failure. Be understanding towards them, towards this generation.

A quotation from Montesquieu

It is not the young people that degenerate: they are not spoilt till those of maturer age are already sunk into corruption.

[Ce n’est point le peuple naissant qui dégénere ; il ne se perd que lorsque les hommes faits sont déja corrompus.]

Charles-Lewis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu (1689-1755) French political philosopher
Spirit of Laws [The Spirit of the Laws; De l’esprit des lois], Book 4, ch. 5 (4.5) (1748) [tr. Nugent (1750)]
