I discovered GRAMPS as a Flatpak application a few weeks ago. I exported my family tree from Ancestry.com, and imported it successfully into GRAMPS. So far things are going pretty well.

If you're into genealogy, it may be an interesting open source project to try out. Their wiki site is really informative and helpful.

Ok, ok, here me out. After losing track of who was what in my family tree I had this brilliant idea: the metric system for ancestors!

Grandparents = Kiloparents (ok)
Great Grandparents = Megaparents (cool)
Great² Grandparents = Gigaparents (very cool)
Great³ Grandparents = Teraparents (not as cool but they are dead so n.b.d.)

We can do the same the other way:

Grandchild = millichild
Great Grandchild = microchild
Great² Grandchild = nanochild
Great³ Grandchild = picochild

No longer will you have to count on your fingers when you talk about distant relatives!

What is Your Political Legacy?

When your descendents look back at your family tree, what will they see? Politically speaking?

Will they see a political pioneer?

Or will they see a follower of popular trends?

Change to citizenship rules in 2025 - Canada.ca

Bill C-3 changes the first-generation limit for Canadian citizenship by descent. Find out who is affected and how the law impacts citizenship eligibility.

When I was researching and then pursuing obtaining my Spanish citizenship, I came to realize that citizenship laws are incredibly varied and changeable. They'll change with the political winds, for good and bad!

It looks like Canada has gone a little against the grain and opened up its citizenship requirements!

Now anyone with a proveable ancestral connection to Canada can apply, not just one generation back! This is even better than Spain “Historical Memory" changes that are now slowly expiring!

"“In January 2025, we had 32 requests for certified copies of vital records and this year in January 2026, we've had over 1,000,” she said, adding most of those requests were made by Americans.”

Millions of Americans can now claim Canadian citizenship by descent. But they have to prove it | CBC News

Amid rising tensions in the United States and increased global volatility, many Americans are looking to Canada — and their roots — for a possible way out following recent changes to Canada’s citizenship rules.

Low energy activity this evening led me to discovering my father's membership forms for the Burma Star Association.
I've also discovered that my parents lived at two addresses I've never heard of before today (and lived there before I appeared on the scene )

The genealogy website I use has a free offer on searching newspapers.
I've wasted a few hours looking up ancestors.

My father in law seems to have won prizes for his allotment raspberries and pinks in the middle 1950s.
There were relations on that side who were variously getting into trouble with the law in the 1910s but saving lives at sea in the 1930s.

I found mentions of a distant cousin of mine who when I was a child seemed very glamorous. She appeared in a number of variety shows, mostly at seaside resorts in the 50s & 60s.

I've also found out a bit more about a Polytechnic Cycling Club memorial race in my family name - I now know it was a 12 hour time trial. I don't know when it was last run though, but the London Mercury CC seem to have taken it on by the mid 60s.
