I understand that garter snakes are most likely beneficial to my lawn ecosystem, but damn like 4 full sized ones scared the shit outta me when I was just mowing. Saw at least 3 other baby and juvenile ones and accidentally squished one by stepping on it...
A snake on the grass!
I'd guess it's a foot long or less. It was a couple of feet off the ground hanging out on the grass and cut-leaf coneflower leaves. A baby garter snake probably. I've seen a several of these this year so there must be a breeding population of them here now.

A garter snake I guess. I'm used to them being more colorful so I was almost thinking it was a Desert Striped Whipsnake but that would be very rare here and the red tongue with black tip is garter snake.
On the rainy side of the state when I was a little kid big enough to pack a bucket around I'd fill the bucket up with garter snakes of all sorts of different colors.
