Walking beneath these ancient boughs sometimes feels like stepping into another world entirely. The dappled light and deep greens of Wicklow are calling! 🌿✨

#fotovorschlag Mein Meisterwerk" I don't know if it's a masterpiece, but I was proud of it anyway. It's a design for a front garden. The clients' wish was for their long, narrow front garden to become a real garden. Their back garden was very small and they loved gardening. They also wanted a place to sit in the sun, preferably with a bit of privacy. They wanted to be able to walk through the garden, but also for visitors to be able to easily find the door and walk to it. A lot of wishes, which I was able to fulfill. They were super happy with it. The first 2 photos were taken at the beginning of the 3rd year. The third photo is a plan. And on the 5th photo you can see the garden after construction, still without plants. I don't design anymore, only sometimes for family and friends, but I kept my old plans. This was a good opportunity to take another look at it.

In an area infested with deer, it is so nice that they never touch irises or peonies which bloom at the same time each spring here in Georgia. Iris 'Daughter of Stars' is the only iris I've grown that reliably lives up to its "rebloomer" status. Pictured here with Peony 'Paula Faye'.

Without some thought & a plan, letting your lawn go will mean “weediness”* and ultimately scrubland.

This is fine, for scrubland & wild areas but in the built environment, a lack of design intention will aggravate neighbours & turn them against #WildlifeGardens & #NativePlants.

Luckily, I am a #Wildlife #FoodForest #GardenDesigner & it’s my job go think, plan & design 😎

*weediness means it looks a mess, it does *not* mean native plants or #WildFlowers.

Letting Your Lawn Go is Not the Answer

You want to help the environment, pollute less, use less resources, and create resilient habitat that's pleasing to both wildlife and people -- and often that means rethinking the lawn. But what...

This is one of those years when I did a lot of the Lemonade & Grape Garden Theme. Those Woodstock Hyacinths are so dreamy - and fragrant. The bulbs are planted in October with the other plant materials... and then we wait for the spring show.

Planning for an upcoming project: these large, green steel planters will need to be completely emptied before I can refill them. No drainage holes were ever placed in them and you can only imagine what's happened here after a year.... whew! Stinky, standing water and dead plants in sludge. But no worries. I'm already working on replacement options.

@JimmyB @kathimmel @blackenedgreen actual plant-insect interactions v complex. See Database of Insects & their Food Plants http://dbif.brc.ac.uk/hosts.aspx in combo with Plant Atlas https://plantatlas.brc.ac.uk/

As #FoodForest #GardenDesigner, I advocate planting edible non-natives all the time, key point is *native plants where possible* ie in terms of biomass & diveristy eg windbreak hedges, ground cover.

Also, design in *habitat diversity* See John Little's amazing work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_AzlRC6TBI
