The #Voyager1 spacecraft took photos in 1979 on #ThisDayInHistory that proved the existence of #volcanoes on #Io, the innermost of the four #GalileanMoons of #Jupiter. Proximity to #Europa & #Ganymede force an orbital eccentricity that then creates tidal heating of Io's interior.

Two views of Jupiter through my telescope last night, taken a few hours before its closest approach to Earth (393.3 million miles/632.9 million km). I was excited to see all four Galilean moons (Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa) around it as well. Not the clearest images as I don’t have the best gear or viewing conditions in light-polluted Brooklyn, but they’re better than my first attempts, and I’ll keep trying to improve.

🌌 Star party night at the Westport Observatory — finally.

We’re back tonight. Gate opens @ 8 PM. On the menu: giant Jupiter and its Galilean moons, Saturn’s nearly edge-on rings, Uranus, Neptune, and plenty of deep-sky eye candy. Clear skies willing, it’s going to be a good one.

Comparing Two Proposed NASA Missions to Jupiter's Moon Io

It's time for a mission to Jupiter's volcanic moon Io. A new proposal outlines what we can learn and how we can learn it.

New Telescope Images of Io are so Good, it Looks like a Spacecraft Took Them

The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), located on Mount Graham in Arizona and run by the University of Arizona, is part of the next generation of extremely large telescopes (ELTs). With two primary mirrors measuring 8.4 m (~27.5 ft), it has a collecting area slightly greater than that of a 30-meter (98.4 ft) telescope. With their … Continue reading "New Telescope Images of Io are so Good, it Looks like a Spacecraft Took Them"
