Back home from a wonderful few days in the great London town. The big reason for the trip was the BBC’s Global Accessibility Awareness Day. So happy for the BBC to have invited me and my wife Maarja to the Broadcasting House, where we took part in the BBC GAAD conference, sat down in a panel, and chatted with senior BBC AI and news managers to talk about AI, journalism, accessibility, and why this all matters. Huge thanks to Johnny Cassidy for the invitation and for showing us around the broadcasting house, where, we got to visit the pit, the BBC’s enormous newsroom, where news is made across online, radio, TV, World Service, local services, and probably several other things I have forgotten. Incredible place. We believed about 2k desks to be in this massive open plan space, which at our time of visit was quite ordinary and quiet. WOuld love to see the racket going on during major global events though. Our thursday ended in the SkyScanner offices for the official #Gaad celebration. Lots of incredibly talented people to hang out with. And I got to finally meet a long time online friend, Ignasi for real this time.
London itself was lovely too. We wandered around, saw Moulin Rouge at the Piccadilly Theatre, walked through Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square, did a Thames river cruise from the London Eye, and had a guide called James who was properly funny and very good at making the city make sense. And before flying home, we got to visit @FreakyFwoof and his family again after many years,, even if only briefly. Which was a small but really lovely ending to a trip.
Also: we randomly gave a bottle of Vana Tallinn, a well known estonian liquor to two guys outside a pub because in london you just chat with random people, and if they are friendly, give them small givts. Travelling is fun. Extremely fun.
