Firmware- und BIOS-Updates unter Linux einfach mit fwupd durchführen

BIOS-Updates unter Linux waren lange eine Qual. fwupd ändert das: ein Framework, ein LVFS-Repo, ein Kommando. BIOS/UEFI, NVMe, Thunderbolt, Intel ME — über 1.000 Geräte unterstützt. Beispiel auf dem ThinkPad X1 Carbon mit Capsule Updates.

I've been (ab?)using Claude to find bugs in my software, and although it's found quite a few false positives, it's also found a lot of actual real bugs. Nothing CVE-worthy, but still important to fix. Releases include:

* libxmlb: https://github.com/hughsie/libxmlb/releases/tag/0.3.26
* libjcat: https://github.com/hughsie/libjcat/releases/tag/0.2.6

#fwupd will follow, when all ^^^ has hit the various build-roots. If anyone wants to polish the translations in the meantime, it's the normal place: https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/fwupd/fwupd/

I'm pondering some interesting talks I could suggest for #OSFC this year. Does anyone want me to talk about anything specific for firmware, #fwupd or LVFS topics?

I'm thinking doing a pretty aggressive FU aiming at some of the major hardware vendors, but I'm not sure my boss would approve. Other ideas welcome.

I'm trying to update fw on a Dell Latitude 5500. fwupdmgr is checking for a shim in the EFI/debian folder. What's up with that? Obviously it's failing because I'm running Ubuntu 24.04.4. Please acc...

'fwupd' on Linux succeeded, where Lenovo System Update on Windows failed

The firmware updates took fine from Linux. Not sure why it was crashing on Windows. After updating from Linux live USB, I rebooted to Windows and checked again with Lenovo System Update. All firmware updates had been applied.

I am getting a few ThinkPad L14 Gen 1 laptops ready with Windows 11.

The first laptop took a while, but updated fine. I did all updates with Snappy Driver Installer, Windows Update and Lenovo System Update. Had to manually remove the touchpad driver and load that again.

On the second laptop, the BIOS update will not apply with Lenovo System Update. It crashes Windows and restarts.

I am going to test the memory. If that checks out fine, I will try to update the BIOS with 'fwupd' in Linux.
