English Electric Lightning T.5 The Lightning was developed from the P.1 research aircraft, and was a fast-climbing Mach 2 interceptor which saw service with both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Saudi Air Force. The power of two reheated Rolls-Royce Avon engines was enough to enable the aircraft to climb at over 20,000 ft/min! This trainer version is unusual for a fighter aircraft in that it had side by side seating (during this era the RAF's trainers all had this feature). The biggest failing of the aircraft was that initial versions had such a small fuel load that it was practically a 'point defence interceptor'.
