I had scraped all the frogspawn off the ground I could and dumped it into a bucket. Most of the spawn had dried out too much and wasn't viable, but we thought we had 13 tadpoles.

Today, it was time to move them into a container more suitable for froglets, though there is no sign of embryonic legs yet. I moved them one by one and was thrilled to find that we have 27 healthy and lively tadpoles.

A couple of months ago, I thought I'd found a small, but perfectly formed, lump of black pearl slime mould just outside our back door. Each "sporangium" was about 2 mm across and looked perfectly black.

Subsequently, I found two other lumps in a direct line to the pond...

As an experiment, I scraped up a very sticky lump and dropped it into a bucket of water. Within half an hour, it was expanding and showing transparent albumen and central black nuclei. Frog's eggs... Somebody couldn't wait!

May flower, ground ivy, little bugs on one of the freshly trimmed pollard willow and the frog-spawn has had its first cell division. Sometimes it's easy to miss things, tiny as they are. Walk slowly, look closely!

#frogspawn. Was the last thing some of them did. The #heron ate at least 7 of them this morning as recorded on the trail cam 😱
Nothing says spring in Ireland like finding a fresh batch of frogspawn in the marshy grass. 🐸✨

I hadn't seen frogspawn or frog tadpoles in years (at our place in France, it mainly seems to be toads), so was quite pleasantly surprised to find these little creatures in an overflow of a field stream, on the side of the road.

On a lighter point from my other posts so far today, I not only saw my first bumblebee of the year, I also found my first frog spawn on my lunchtime dog walk around Victoria Park in Glasgow. Both are good signs Spring is finally here.
