Friendslop - The New Genre That Saved Gaming
GubbinsI hate the term "friendslop". As a (game) developer, I find it insulting and disrespectful. "Slop" suggests something poor quality, uncreative, made cheaply, quickly, and in bulk. The games I commonly see described using this term are none of those things - they're crafted carefully, intentionally, and with an eye for quality.
But I realised that "friendslop" could rather refer to that which is produced using the game - that is to say, streamers and YouTubers create friendslop videos (low effort, quick, cheap to make) using these games as tools.
So, like coffee machines are tools for making coffee, and not themselves made of coffee, friendslop games are tools for creators to make friend-slop, and not themselves slop.
I guess whether you feel better or worse about that interpretation depends on whether you identify more as a game developer or a content creator.
But in either sense I still consider it a derogatory term.
