Slideshow quizes (animated simply!) are possible with a 32bit Fujitsu machine that used to work through Windows Vista.

Now the machine works (much better probably) through Debian 12. The Gnome Window Manager was OK (maybe slow) until the other projector screen was connected. Then it froze up a bit and I couldn't figure out how to configure the display.

So another try with the LXDE Window Manager and configuring the projector display (VGA monitor) to be 1024×768 like the laptop (LCD monitor) and I'm set!!

Now that I think of it all the old Fujitsu PCs I've dealt with have been reliable.. They've all been 32 bit so maybe it's unfair to compare them with the little Panasonic machines that won't take electricity anymore: one was running Debian12 Gnome and the other had the Win11 OS it came with but both just used up both batteries than refused to start up again even while plugged in. It's irritating. For years and old NEC laptop with no battery served to show movies but these more modern PCs are becoming a pain in the butt. It was probably a mistake to get another little Panasonic machine. The BIOS won't show from pressing F2 during start up. One has to work through the irritating Win11 screen and find settings to completely power down the PC. Then go through the big distraction OS again to get the machine to boot from a DVd or USB stick..

It must be the "Invisible Foot" principle of the economy at work again. Any little thing that is more wasteful and irritating for others somehow enriches and further empowers corporate billionaire types like Bill Gates.. I hoe he can't ruin Africa's farming and chickens the way he ruins PCs for me..

The weather is getting nicer and my Free Night School timeslot is moved from Wednesdays to Fridays for April and May. An 8 or so year old girl got into Gcompris running through Debian/Gnome on an ancient MacBook. She kept finding interesting activities in GCompris, I had never seen half the things she and was relieved she figured them by herself. I just tried t take photos of each activity using both a digital camera and a FoolPhone. I posted a bunch of photos to instagram with the AtYorugakkou mentions. That was good because a local dentist asked about setting up old computers for kids in his waiting room. So now there's an old Win7 machine set up in the dentist's waiting room and four of his staff members are acquainted with it. A lot of people seem to have old machines lying around that could become useful for somebody.. I might end up with a couple more laptops, maybe I should start visiting the nearest little clinics and hospitals and see if they'd like to Free Software machines in their waiting rooms. And make sure people can get in touch if they have old PCS they want freed up for their kids' learning...

Move to #FreedomSoftware and #FreedomHardware once available/affordable

Syncthing is awesome; also awkward. A better Syncthing would let me manage the options for all replicas of a folder in a unified view, from any device in the group. (Assuming I grant permission.) Likewise, let me manage multiple folders having mostly the same options across all of them. Right now I have to visit each replica separately, and review each folder. With 2 replicas of 2 folders it's tiresome and error-prone. With 3+ replicas of 3+ folders it's ridiculous. I need only a few options to differ across devices or folders, and I want to see those differences highlighted in the unified view.

Freedom Software turns 40!

Happy 40th #GNU (for yesterday)!

Here in Australia its already 29 Sep, but we won't let that minor technicality get in the way. May the next 40 years of #freedomSoftware be better and more liberating than the last. Here is an interview with @rms showing how far we must still go.

Many cheers to all that make #freedomRespectingSoftware, with a very special thanks to #RichardStallman, of course.

Hip-hip horray.

…You might already know about this, but https://h-node.org is a project by the @fsf that helps people to identify #computers that they can use.

It can be pretty tricky to find #hardware that is #ethical but by running a basic command and checking the peripherals listed by their Vendor and Product IDs (that look like "[3fc2:001b]") one can often quickly identify if a device will be suited to them, as #FreedomSoftware Enjoyers.

However you think the internet *should* be — that's how it is.

You say "large hosts" like they are just 'large hosts', and not monopolistic, fascist entities, that suppress, repress, marginalise, and hypnotise.

> (…) and use Linux and Tor?

What is wrong with Linux and Tor? Why did you even join fedi? It sounds like #freedomSoftware is not for you.
