I've been saying for a while that there are certain subjects for which #liberals should keep their beliefs to themselves and their big mouths shut, because when they voice their opinions all they do is drive moderate voters to the dark side.
Two prime examples:
What the liberal says: "People should ride #bicycles or #ebikes to reduce harmful emissions."
What many people hear (or are told by conservative media): "The liberals want to take away your car and force you to ride a fucking bicycle to school or work, even if the weather is terrible or you need to take your children somewhere. Instead of riding in a nice warm or air-conditioned car, you'll be out in a blizzard or driving rain or scorching heat, and you'll have to make multiple trips to the store to bring home enough food to bring your family, and good luck if you need to go more than a few miles or carry more than one child. They want to turn us into a society like China or North Korea, or the Netherlands!"
Result, Trump voters.
When the liberal says, "People should become vegan or vegetarian because animals produce greenhouse gases, and now there are plant based substitutes for many kinds of meat."
What many people hear (or are told by conservative media): "The liberals want to take away your tasty steaks and hamburgers and force you to eat vegetables that won't provide you with the protein your body needs, and that often require more preparation and frankly sometimes taste awful. Or, they want you to eat #frankenfood that costs three times as much as the stuff you've been eating all your life. And most of the proponents of this are trying to push their non-meat-eating religion off on good red-blooded Americans, including #Christian Americans. In the #Bible God told us what we can eat and that included many animals!"
Result, Trump voters (and yes I know their God also said they should NOT eat certain meats, like pork or shellfish, but they just pay attention to the parts they agree with anyway).
My point is that although nobody is happy about the negative effects of #climatechange, there are also very few people who, if they are completely honest about it, want to change a single thing about the way they live. I mean, they won't get vaccinated, they won't stop smoking or excessive drinking, or make any of a number of other changes in the way they live in order to save or prolong their own lives, so they certainly won't do anything that inconveniences them or costs them more money just to save the planet.
Now, between the two parties, which one do they see as the one that is going to force them to make changes they really don't want to make, and which is the one that is most likey to maintain the status quo or even take them back to the "good old days" (never mind that it is too late to go back to the "good old days" where the climate is concerned)?
I think this is a MUCH overlooked reason as to why #Democrats don't win in some close elections. They need to assure people that NO, we won't make you give up your car or your gas dryer, NO we will not force you to ride a fucking bicycle if you don't want to, NO we will not force you to stop eating foods you like, and so on. People are more willing to change when they see change as something desirable, not something being forced on them by government or (especially) by people with a belief system that differs from theirs.
And yes, I know that the Rerpublicans will force much worse changes on us all if given the opportunity, but that's not what they are hearing in their news bubbles. So all I am saying is, at least for now, please tone down the rhetoric about forcing individuals to make changes in their lives. I can even see where bans on plastic bags in stores might be enough to tip the vote in a close election.
Otherwise moderates could get scared of the changes liberals want to make more than the changes Trump and his #MAGAts want to make - and remember, Trump and the #GOP are not going to do much of ANYTHING that will help avoid climate change, and are very open about it, and that actually appeals to people who don't want changes forced on them!
