@ChrisMayLA6 I am now worried that as the UK starts to move beyond #FPTP for Westminster elections, it won't unpack the term #PR.

Pure #dHondt or #AMS are the likely winners, although #AndyBurnham is muddying the waters by mendaciously labelling #AV as #PR. It isn't.

There is a serious risk that as political parties decline, the UK will adopt an electoral system which hands more power to the dying parties. Who will champion #STV?

@ChrisMayLA6 #LibDems were in coslition with Scittish Labour 1999–2007, and got #STV for Scittish local elections.

But LibDems were later almost wiped out in Wales. So when #PlaidCyrmu and #WelshLabour agreed to abandon #AMS for the #Senedd, there was no strong LibDem voice for STV. The Senedd is now #dHondt only.

2024 showed how #FPTP is clearly broken in Westminster elections. Labour's ⅔ of seats on ⅓ of votes was so obscene that there should have been huge, destructive riots.

@ChrisMayLA6 #STV was used for the Commons university constituencies, from 1918 to 1950. The last STV election to the Commons was the Combined Scottish Universities by-election in November 1946.

For decades thereafter, the Liberal Party and it's successors the #LibDems championed STV. But their enthusiasm lapsed after the disastrous #AV referendum in 2011. Now in a fragmented landscape, LibDems are slight beneficiaries of #FPTP, and seem uninterested in electoral reform.

@gareth @peteriskrisjanis @kibcol1049 We do though, all the time. The #FPTP electoral system forces us to compromise or get the very worst of humanity. It horrifies me that Labour won't scrap it and that Cameron used 2-choice-ism to manipulate both Scotland and Brexit. Won one, lost one; unless the whole thing was a sham and that was the agreed plan all along.
@NationCymru I would like to know what you are proposing instead because elected chambers haven't been a great way to run countries lately. We need to start with scrapping #FPTP for the whole UK. It isn't safe.

@crankylinuxuser @mcnado

no disagreement only clarification:

#AOC/ #Mamdani are #DSA that ran as #democrats

the way forward is take over the #democraticParty, not 3rd party (or worse, not voting)

with #FPTP voting in the #USA a 3rd party vote only divides the left vote and #MAGA wins

( #parliamentary #FPTP like the #UK lends 3rd parties stability)

worse: no #vote because "dems suck." while true, that only keeps them sucking

show up in the #primaries and choose the AOC/ Mamdani #candidate

There is a lot to be said about this point of view. #Labour are beginning to realise that posturing for votes as opposed to developing and supporting attitudes that gain votes and do not leave their supporters abandoning them might be worthwhile. The last GE was won (with a massive majority) by very careful campaigning in a relatively few seats and (certainly in the case of Scotland) down right lies about what they would support. Change might be good.

Hi all, have you ever heard about Majority Judgment as a voting system?

Here a detailled article with benefits and where it was used: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10602-022-09385-7

Here a software to try it: https://app.mieuxvoter.fr/en

I see it well also if embededd in the MMP system (MMP+MJ) to improve MMP+FPTP that is being used in Germany and New Zealand.

Electoral reform: the case for majority judgment - Constitutional Political Economy

The majority judgment (MJ) voting method works well in theory and in practice. Not only does MJ avoid the classical Condorcet and Arrow paradoxes, but it also overcomes the domination paradox, from which paired comparisons by majority rule, approval voting, and all Condorcet consistent methods suffer. This article also shows why MJ best reduces the impact of strategic manipulation and minimizes ties to the extreme. The article illustrates the resistance of MJ to manipulations in a real example, discusses other salient properties of MJ, and summarizes several recent applications that show MJ to be, despite its newness, the right basis of electoral reform.

Only two things are missing: ban #EVM and #FPTP. With approval voting, the 5th point is not required. Elections automatically become nonpartisan. #CJP #CockroachJantaParty cockroachjantaparty.org
