I used to love Foyles, back in the 80s. Their filing system was famously chaotic but the wonderful staff could always find a particular book, somehow.

A major competitor expanded and Dillons was a stunning and huge book store, just around the corner. It was a delightful place to shop for books. When they launched they put a bus-stop ad right outside Foyles which read, "Foyled again? Try Dillons."

Somewhere I have one of their plastic shopping bags with that exact phrase.

Dillons changed hands several times and was eventually folded into Waterstones.

Enjoy the magic of Foyles!

Funny they don't mention that in the shop's display about its history 😆

"famously eccentric Christina Foyle ...regularly dismissing staff after a year....Perversely, it was partly because the shop was so badly run that it seemed to charm its customers." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45446899

Foyles: yksi parhaista saarivaltakunnan kirjakaupoista. Viisi kerrosta ja paljon nuoria ihmisiä ostoksilla. #bookstore #foyles #london #kirjataivas

This is very sad news. #Foyles is my spiritual home in many ways. Sooner or later Waterstones will collapse and Foyles will be sold for scrap. There is a business there but they need to be smart and independent, independently run at least.

I'd "support" Foyles ala the Guardian. But who would send money to Waterstones?
