Ranger Sarah walks towards the Fort Kearny Stockade called Fort Mitchel or East Fort. In response to Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes attacking stagecoaches and settlements along the Oregon Trail, in August 1864 construction of a stockade to the east of the parade grounds began. Earthworks were developed 3 or 4 feet high and a stockade of split ash logs, set in the ground and extending up about 7 feet, was built.

As Ranger Sarah walks the path she can she post marking the locations where buildings once stood at the fort. Like most military posts on the Plains, Fort Kearny was a collection of buildings arranged around an open square or parade ground.
