> In temperate forests, all the southern Canada forests other than the boreal, we’re finding that at least in the west, 50% of the carbon is in the soil and 50% of it is above ground in trees, shrubs, herbs and some wood on the ground. Half of it is below ground. Half of that is in the organic layer or the forest floor, which some people think of as topsoil. The other half is in the mineral soil underneath. What we’re finding is that we’re losing 61% of the carbon pool in the forest floor.
